Next, Brian launched Shoewallet Active Gear, a sports apparel company that took off fast. It was featured on NBC’s Today Show as a Top Fall Fitness pick, and profiled in Women’s Day, Shape, and Runner’s World. Customers included Skechers, the U.S. Department of Defense, Dunkin' Donuts, Susan G. Komen, Southwest Airlines, and Virginia Tech.
Then in 2010, Brian read a headline that changed everything. It was the Sports Illustrated story, “How and Why Athletes Go Broke.” The stat was brutal. Eighty percent of pro athletes lose everything within a few years of retiring. The article called it a financial pandemic. Brian saw the fix—better advisors. He launched Pro Athlete Direct, a coaching service built to support elite advisors who served pro athletes. Many of his clients were former athletes themselves. Super Bowl champs. MLB All-Stars. Team captains. D1 legends. Barron’s Top 100 advisors. They had walked the path and wanted to give back.
That return to the advisor world exposed a deeper truth. The real pandemic wasn’t just financial. It was structural. The biggest threat to growth wasn’t lack of desire. It was referral delay.
